Morocco is a country that can encounter extreme temperatures, so choosing the right time of year to visit is important. The weather is at its best in spring (mid-March today), when the country is lush and green, followed by autumn (September to November),
when the heat of summer has eased. It can get particularly cold in the High Atlas Mountains, where snow covers the peaks from November to July. For this reason, we run our mount Toubkal trips either in May or around September-October.

How long does it take to climb Mount Toubkal?
Generally, most of the adventures take 2 days and 1 night in the refuge. However, in some trips, depending on the Toubkal circuit, the trips can take up to three days and cover Berber villages, and the longest trip took six days to complete around the Toubkal mount. Travelers visit different summits on this trip, as well as Ifni Lake.In the heart of the Toubkal mountains, Lake Ifni nestles in a valley between the peaks of Jbel Toubkal, Ouanoukrim, and Ifni Dome. The lake was formed by a huge landslide that enclosed the valley.

what to wear atlas mountains?
For trekking on Mount Toubkal, one of the most important items climbers take with them for Mount Toubkal is water-proof jackets. Wear base layers, a backpack, walking boots/shoes, walking socks, and a hat. Gloves and gaiters. however, if you need personal equipment we can rent out kits like sleeping bags, waterproof jackets, trekking poles, etc). While Mount Toubkal can be climbed at any time of year, there are some months that are better than others. April and May in the spring give cool, moderate temperatures with no rain or precipitation, and September and October in the autumn tend to match those circumstances.

Africa’s Atlas Mountains are located to the northwest. Across Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, it stretches for around 2,500 kilometers there is no continuous chain of mountains in the Atlas Mountains, but instead, several ranges separated by huge expanses of land known as plateaux.
The Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean coast are separated by mountains. There are several passes between the coast and the Sahara desert in this region.
The highest peak in North Africa is Toubkal, located in Morocco. The peak is 4,167 meters (13,671 feet) high.
1. The population of the Atlas Mountains
Around the Atlas Mountains, most of the population lives in small villages rather than in cities. Berbers, a North African culture with roots dating back thousands of years, are the most famous and numerous of Atlas populations.
Mountain ecosystems support a range of plant and animal species that are unique in Africa, often more similar to those in Europe. Many of these species are endangered and some have already gone extinct.
2. The most visited place in the atlas mountians
The most visited and largest of the ranges, home to the mother of all peaks in North Africa, Jbel Toubkal, lie just outside Marrakech. The Ourika Valley will captivate you before you get in Imlil, the perfect base for the Toubkal trek. When in bloom, the cherry and almond orchards, as well as the wildflowers that have taken over the lovely riverfront, are breathtaking.
Then there’s the daring climb up Mount Toubkal. The walk may be completed in two days with the assistance of a mule to carry your bag so you can concentrate on pushing yourself to the mountain’s peak at approximately 14, 000 feet. Take in the vistas of the craggy Atlas Mountains disappearing into the Sahara desert when you reach the top. Winter is cold and snowy, but it is also enjoyable. The environment becomes hotter and dryer as you travel south towards the Sahara desert. Summer is hotter in the valleys than it is further up, but it is still nice.
The months of March through June are ideal for hiking in the Atlas Mountains. This means you’ll be there in the spring and early summer when the weather is lovely and the roads are somewhat dry (there will still be snow at higher altitudes).
In Imlil, the average high temperature between August to October is 12.8℃ (55℉) and maximum temperatures of 19.3℃ (66.8℉).
Autumn in the Middle Atlas Mountains sees average high temperatures of 25℃ (76.5℉) and maximum temperatures of 35℃ (95℉).
The Anti-Atlas Mountains experiences average high temperatures of 14.4℃ (57.9℉) and maximum temperatures of 27.8℃ (82℉).
4. The second peak of the Atlas mountains is Oukaimeden
Another one of Morocco’s best heights is Oukaimeden. Get this: in January and February you can actually strap on skis or your board, and descend the highest skiable peak on the continent at 8,530 feet. Oukaimeden is a dream for skiers who want to experience more than one climate on their travels and it’s also pretty sweet riding the highest ski lift in Africa (or going old-school and ascending by donkey).

Waterfall Aourwiz
The Aourwiz Waterfall is a beautiful spot to see while hiking in the High Atlas Mountains. It is known as the Aourwiz Cascade and is located near the town of Tizi Oussem. The terrain is less arid, and the water crashing down the two tiers of the rock face nearly looks out of place.

Mount Toubkal is a mountain peak found in Toubkal National Park in southwestern Morocco. With its height of 4,167 metres (13,671 feet), Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa. It’s situated in Morocco’s southwestern region about 60 kilometers south of Marrakech, just part of the Atlas Mountain Range. A popular destination for climbers, it is the highest peak for over 2000 km.
As well as it’s ever changing weather, Mount Toubkal s is also famous for its incredible views across the surrounding countryside(Dowar), attracting both experienced hikers and trekking newbies alike! If you’d like to climb Mount toubkal and experience the stunning highlands, here’s how to do it …
WHEN SHOULD I CLIMB MOUNT TOUBKAL?
The best months to climb Mount Toubal are April and May, and September and October.However If you are an amateur walker, then you should only Clim Mount Toubkal during the summer months (June-September). Snow is often seen at the summit all year round, however during winter months the mountain is likely to be thick in snow and ice, covering the paths and making the journey to the top extremely dangerous.
Prior to setting off you should always double check the weather forecast. A day in June and July may feel like a lovely summer’s day at the bottom of the mountain, however by the time you reach the summit it can feel just like winter. The average annual temperature at the summit is below 0°! Therefore, it is so important to make sure you are fully prepared before setting off. WHERE IS MOUNT TOUBKAL?
Mount Toubkal is located near Imlil village , The peak is situated 40 miles (60 km) south of Marrakech in the High Atlas (Haut Atlas) , and is part of Parc National du Jbel Toubkal
WHAT ROUTE SHOULD I TAKE TO THE SUMMIT?
There are two main routes to the top of Mt toubkal both varying in the difficult,The Mountain Path is the route taken by the majority of visitors is Imlil valley Path, Whilst The Lac Ifni route is a much more challenging invloing long time disctence and long scramble along the traverse of the arete.
The Ifni Lac route is challenging, but spectacular route involves 1506m of ascent and a total walking distance of 17.5km. This is a tough ascent – and should only be taken by experienced trekkers.
We highly recommend trekking to the summit of Mount Toubkal via Imlil Valley.
Climbing Mount Toubkal via Imlil Valley
Typical Itinerary
This itinerary follows the most common route to Toubkal on the South. We highly recommend itineraries that build in one or two more days for acclimatisation.
Day 1:

- Arrive or be in Marrakech, drive from Marrakech to Imlil in the morning
- Trek to Refuge Camp and spend the night
Day 2:

- Trek to Toubkal via South Side and descend via South Side
- Return to Imlil then Marrakech
The Route
The Imlil valley Route is taken by the majority of visitors because it much easier and have 3 phases
The First Phase: From Imlil Valley 1340 meters to Chamharouch 1506m of ascent most of the route is normal and easy.
The Second Phase: From Chamharouch to the Refuge 3207 here you will stop for lunch which will be prepared for you. After, you will carry on walking uphill to the refuge where you will spend the night. It will take around 5 to 6 hours walk. The road here is not that difficult also very easy.
You will feel like you have accomplished half of the adventure when you arrive in the refuge, where you will meet other travelers from different countries. After dinner, we recommend preparing your gear before starting the journey to the summit.
There are two Mount Toubkal Refuges. There is Les Mouflons and Cabine Alpine Fancais (CAF). The Les Mouflons is named after a deer (Mouflons) found in the Atlas Mountains. Cabine Alpine Francais is also called the “Neltner”, named after Mr. Louis Neltner, a geologist, and mountaineer. You are able to book both refuges online in advance.
The Refuges’ are by no means luxury, but they do the job. They are dorm style and have shared bathrooms.
It is always a good idea to bring some snacks of your own, as the Refuges offer very basic food. Take advantage of your time in Marrakech and purchase some delicious dried fruits and nuts.
If the weather is good and you have camping equipment, it is possible to camp outside the Refuges.
